Town of Wirt

Located in the rolling hills of southwestern Allegany County, New York, the Town of Wirt is a rural community situated between the towns of Bolivar and Friendship. First settled in 1812 and officially established in 1838, Wirt played an important role in the region’s early development through farming, milling, and later the Richburg oil boom that brought national attention to the area.

Wirt also shares a unique connection to American literature. Author L. Frank Baum, creator of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, spent part of his youth in nearby Richburg during the area’s oil boom era, leaving the town with a fascinating link to one of America’s most beloved stories.
